Obviously, JJ's jersey is a lock in the Cameron rafters. However, will Duke retire Shelden Williams' #23?
Coach K always says that the litmus test is this: stay all four years, win national awards, and exemplify Duke excellence. Then you qualify for consideration.
My legion of 4 readers, check out Shelden's bio (linked in the title) and come out with your thoughts!
Damn dude, you READ my mind. I was just wondering this!
ReplyDeleteI can't completely decide yet. I think it could depend on how key Shelden is for us in the tournament (an integral performance in the tournament and National Championship would definitely seal it). It looks like Shelden is going to end up in the top two or three all-time in rebounds for Duke and he's already obliterated the shot blocking records, which bodes pretty well. I think if he can get another National Defensive Player of the Year, that'd probably seal it also. Overall, I'd say his chances are pretty good, but he's not an absolute shoe-in like JJ. Shelden has definitely been recognized for numerous accomplishments on a National level and is an absolutely indispensible part of the best team in the country (yeah, I said it).
And sorry to be a nit-picky bitch, but you don't have to stay all four years to have your jersey retired at Duke...you just have to graduate, like JWill did in three years.
Ah, my bad. You are correct. Shelden also has the honorable distinction of being only the third player in NCAA history with 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 350 blocks and 150 steals in his career. The other two were Pervis Ellison and David Robinson. Not bad company.
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough call ... the last few players to have their jersey retired have been national player of the year / naismith winners ... if Duke wins the national championsihp AND shelden wins another national defensive player of the year, then I give him better than 50-50 odds. Otherwise, I'm not so sure.
